Downtown, Maine: Where the built and natural environments merge

Water Street, Augusta, MaineRiver trails.  Ancient land corridors.  Scenic Byways.  Downtowns.  Maine’s place-based economy is complex and beautiful, challenging and hopeful.  We’re thinking big at the Maine Downtown Center and imagining a future where our historic downtowns are revered as treasured places and the outdoors is an accessible short walk from every door.   Just the word – Maine – stirs a deep-seated fascination with this storied place.   Downtowns and village centers across the state are progressing through the efforts of hard-working, visionary leaders.  I applaud their efforts.  I give standing ovations to those who keep trying through adversity, who show up to volunteer, who serve on downtown boards, who work relentlessly to keep their Main Street organizations on track and on mission.

I’m Roxanne Eflin, Senior Program Director with the Maine Development Foundation/Maine Downtown Center and I am passionate about historic downtowns.  We look forward to sharing ideas and insights about downtown revitalization.  Your comments, questions and ideas are welcome and encouraged.  Learn more at www.mdf.org or reach me at reflin@mdf.org.
